Did you know that the Dreamland did not begin as a theater on South Water Street? It was originally built in the 1830s as a Hicksite Meeting House situated on Main Street, and also was used in that location as a straw hat factory and roller-rink. It was moved to Brant Point in the late 1800s to serve as the main structure of the Nantucket Hotel, and then floated back to town to its current location on South Water in 1905.
Protecting the historic fabric of the old building continues to be a priority for the Dreamland Board of Directors, evidenced by their taking great care and expense in making sure important features are refurbished and reinstated into the new theater. Public funds totalling $750,000 secured from the Community Preservation Committee have helped in this effort, and these monies also have assisted the Nantucket Dreamland Foundation's (NDF) careful photo and video documentation of the deconstruction and reconstruction of the theater. All of this material is now being put together as an archive on film, thereby producing a unique video series which will be shown on our website today and in the theater at the project's completion.
